Fu Leng, the Ninth Kami, the Dark One. When the Kami fell from tengoku, Onnotangu managed to grab hold of Fu Leng. The young Kami struggled with his father and eventually freed himself. He fell a long way, further south then his brothers and sisters. Jigoku, the Realm of Evil, sensed the young Kami and drew him to itself. Fu Leng’s fall broke the earth and he found himself in the Realm of Evil. The malign presence of Jigoku corrupted Fu Leng, turning him to dark thoughts. When he finally escaped the Pit caused by his fall, he found the land around corrupted and tainted. He searched out his kin, looking for the other Kami and wondering why they had not come to save him. When he found the others, he discovered the fledgling Empire with his brother Hantei as Emperor. Fu Leng was outraged, demanding that he be allowed to compete against Hantei as the others had. Instead, Togashi stepped forward and accepted the Challenge as he had sat out the original Tournamnet of the Kami. Fu Leng agreed and allowed Togashi the choice of weapons. Togahsi choose ‘every living thing under the Sun and Moon’. Fu Leng was out raged to be tricked in such a fashion and returned to the Shadowlands. There he built an army of oni, goblins and other creatures with which he launched an assault on the Empire.
For years the war against Fu Leng raged until one day an old man presented himself to the Emperor. Hantei, ever a wise leader, listened to the strange little man. His brother Shiba recorded their conversations. This was the Tao of Shinsei, the founding text of Rokugani religion. Shinsei explained that he knew how to defeat Fu Leng, but that only mortals could do so. Gathering the greatest heroes of the Clans, the Seven Thunders, he set out into the Shadowlands. Only two of the eight returned, Shinsei who was badly wounded and Shosuro of the Scorpion Clan. They bore twelve scrolls, the Black Scrolls, used to bind Fu Leng’s soul to Jigoku. With that victory the war was over. The Crab Clan took to standing guard over the Shadowlands and waited. The Empire grew in peace for over a thousand years.
Then came the Scorpion Clan Coup. Bayushi Shoju killed Hantei XXXVIII, believing that he was stopping a prophecy that the last Hantei would become a vessel for Fu Leng. Instead, he hastened that propechy. Shoju was killed by Akodo Toturi and Hantei XXXIX took his father’s throne. A sickly child, he was perfect for Fu Leng’s needs.
The Black Scrolls were opened and Fu Leng freed to possess the last Hantei. Then came the Crab march on Otosan Uchi led by Hida Kisada. The Great Bear believed that if the Emperor couldn’t protect the Empire then a new Emperor was needed. Kisada and his son Yakamo confronted the Emperor in the throne room. Expecting him to be weak and easy prey, Yakamo attacked the young Hantei only to be cast aside as easily as a rag doll. Kisada was enraged and foolishly charged the Emperor. Fu Leng seized the opportunity presented, allowing Kisada in his rage and grief to strike him down. As Kisada did so, Fu Leng used the Crab Champion’s moment of weakness to possess his soul.
When the Crab troops and Seppun guards reached the throne room they found Hida Kisada seated upon the Emerald Throne, the body of Hantei XXXIX at his feet. Yakamo was injured and taken away to heal as Kisada declared himself Emperor. Fu Leng smiled as the assembled court knelt to him. In the years since, Fu Leng has tightened his hold on the Empire. The destruction of the Emerald Throne and the removal of the Crab from the Shadowlands border are the least of his acts. The Brotherhood of Shinsei is no more. The Dragon Clan are besieged within their mountains. War has come to Rokugan in a way never before seen. Yoritomo has dared to place himself against the power of a god. He will soon learn the error of his ways
