Viewed by most of the Empire as a weak Emperor and ineffectual leader, nothing could be further from the truth. Hantei XXXVIII was a wise leader and administrator who had done much to restore the Empire to it’s former glory. A young man when he came to the Emerald Throne, he was weighed down by the endless, pointless bickering of the Court and the Great Clans, the early years of his regin were marked by his boundless energy. The constant need to keep the Lion and Crane from each other’s throats wore him down. No other event did more to bring the young Emperor to the breaking point then the death of his wife at the hands of Bloodspeakers. His young son was rescued by a canny ronin who replaced his own son with the Imperial Heir. After the loss of his wife, Hantei XXXVIII began to rely more and more on his advisers, particularly Kakita Toshimoko and Bayushi Shoju. Shoju, the Scorpion Clan Champion, learned of the prophecy that stated that the last Hantei would become Fu Leng’s vessel and herald a Thousand Years of Darkness. Shoju betrayed his friend and Emperor, cutting down Hantei XXXVIII on the steps of the Emerald Throne. With that, Hantei XXXVIII, the last of the strong Hantei Emperors passed and the Empire was plunged into the longest period of warfare and strife since the Founding.
