Mantis Clan

Clan Colours Green/Blues

The Mantis are a Clan apart. Founded by the grandson of Hida, Kaimetsu-uo the Mantis are referred to as the oldest of the Minor Clans, though the Fox Clan disputes this. The Mantis are a Great Clan not through the grace of being founded by a Kami but through the will of one man, Yoritomo. Yoritomo always believed that it was the destiny of the Mantis to be recognised as equals, that the destinction between minor and great clan was nothing more then arbitrary. In the months leading up to the Clan War, Yoritomo struck alliances with many of the other minor clan daimyo and stood side by side against the true enemies of the Empire. Yoritomo found a respect for Toturi and followed him to Otosan Uchi on the Second Day of Thunder. At the planning meeting for the assault on the city, Yoritomo went before the gathered Clan Champions and told them that if the Mantis were not recognised as a Great Clan, his troops would attack the armies of the Clans. He offered his head for the offense. The Clan Champions were surprised but agreed. The Mantis became the Eight Great Clan on that day. A bright future was shattered when the Thunders failed. Toturi, Hitomi and Hida Yakamo were the only Thunders to survive. The Clans were in disarry, leaving Yoritomo to organise the retreat. The Mantis withdrew to the Islands of Spice and Silk and began to consolidate their strength.
Yoritomo and Toturi began to draw up plans for the campaign against Kisada. When Toturi refused to be proclaimed Emperor, stating that the one holding the Throne was the Emperor irregardless of who they were. Shortly afterwards, Toturi disappeared. Yoritomo’s followers began to press for him to take the Throne, but he also refused. Stating that he hadn’t earned the right to be Emperor, Yoritomo turned his attention to the war. It was the Wasp Clan daimyo Tsurchi who proposed the idea of Yoritomo taking the role of shogun. For this act, Yoritomo granted the Wasp fealty and absorbed them as a family of the Mantis.
The Mantis are the only Clan not divided into two. The loyalty of his men to Yoritomo is stronger then steel.

Families of the Mantis
Yoritomo – The followers of the Son of Storms who fought on the Second Day of Thunder have taken his name and sworn fealty to him. Far from displeasing or angering him, Yoritomo has allowed the practice to continue. As shogun, he has given the family name offical status. It is not, however, recognised by the rest of the Empire.
Tsurchi – The former Wasp have taken their daimyo’s name since becoming members of the Mantis. They still cling to their own code of honour and escew the tennants of bushido. Again, this is not a name recognised by the rest of the Empire.
