Shogun is a title that roughly translates as ‘Supreme Military Commander’ or ‘Dictator’. In the early centuries of the Empire, not all of the Hantei Emperors took to the field to command thier armies. This was left to a trusted advisor to command the forces in the Emperor’s name. Though a rikugunshokan or general, commanded the army, the shogun would command the generals, acting as the Emperor’s voice. The title fell out of favour in the late seventh century when the Emerald Champion and the Captain of the Imperial Legions began to perform these duties instead. After the Second Day of Thunder and the defeat of the Thunders, Yoritomo asked Toturi to declare himself Emperor, as he had once before. When the Black Lion refused, many Mantis and other Minor Clan samurai began to voice their support for Yoritomo to claim the Throne. The Son of Storms refused, as he had done what he wanted by raising the Mantis to the Great Clans status. Instead, when his ally Tsuruchi daimyo of the Wasp suggested that he take on the role of Shogun. Yoritomo accepted. Shortly after, Toturi and his close advisor Takuan disappeared. Many whispered that Yoritomo had a hand in the disappearance, but no one knows where the Black Lion has gone.
